Living in the Lowveld is a fairly fresh experience for Shaun Brown, who moved here from Cape Town less than two years ago. Motorbikes on the other hand are nothing new to him.

His earliest memory of riding a bike is when he was 4 years old. His dad bought him a little PW50 and he has an action packed photo on his desk as proof. “I think that is where it all started,” Shaun states admittedly.

"His earliest memory of riding a bike is when he was 4 years old."

I do not discriminate against other brands.

Go Nelspruit:
What is the most interesting trip you’ve done on a bike?
Shaun:
We did a trip to Graaff Reinet from Cape Town three years ago. It was a Harley-Davidson event called the Camdeboo Rally; 8 hours in the saddle and a mind blowing experience. And that was the same day I got my official rally tattoo - I’ve always wanted one.

Go Nelspruit:
Why would you suggest a Harley-Davidson over any other road or dual purpose motorcycle?
Shaun:
Look, I’m a big bike lover, full stop. I do not discriminate against other brands. Harley-Davidson would be the number one choice based on lifestyle. Everyone comes together with the same intention in mind - breaking free from the norm. You get doctors in their professional wear during the day and over weekends you see them in leather attire, with the chains, rings and tattoos. You get to be who you want be, without being judged by society.

Go Nelspruit:
Has the lifestyle always been like this, or has there been a shift lately?
Shaun:
I think the stigma attached to Harley-Davidson back in the day was rough, bearded, tattooed bikers who took no nonsense. But a variety of people and younger generations are going for the brand now and it has clearly changed.

Go Nelspruit:
We’ve also noticed more women bikers showing interest in the brand lately. Can you elaborate more on that?
Shaun:
Again, it is a whole new society of break free riders. Women bikers are not frowned upon anymore, but actually accepted and appreciated within the lifestyle.

Go Nelspruit:
Which model would you suggest to a novice biker, buying their first Harley-Davidson?
Shaun:
It would have to be either two models. Your XL883N IRON, which is an 883cc; it has loads of customizing options, which makes it personal to the individual rider. And then the Street 750 or Street Rod, with a 750cc motor.
